With over 20 years of IT experience across the public and private sector, Sello Mmakau has served as the Group CIO and CEO of Afrocentric Technologies for nearly three years. In his current role, Sello is responsible for the Group’s Digital Strategy, IT Applications and Infrastructure, revenue, new products and markets. He’s in charge of the optimisation of IT operations in compliance with goals, policies and objectives established by the Group Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors. He directs, coordinates and administers all aspects of Afrotech operations or subsidiary operations through subordinates and directs and coordinates information systems planning and functions, including all phases of systems design, development, installation and operations. More of his responsibilities include the delivery of IT Infrastructure, Service Delivery and Business Solutions Development and Support, IT Governance, Risks Management and Cybersecurity.
Throughout the past few years, Sello has been working on the enterprise architecture, the Group digital strategy, a new technology operating model, a new sourcing model, a Big Data strategy, a Cloud strategy and responsive IT structure, a new data analytics and business intelligence operating model, Telemedicine APP, Mobile APP, brokers and medical providers portals, a cybersecurity strategy, an omnichannel strategy and a WhatsApp’s call centre solution. He’s implemented customer-facing digital solutions including chatbots, portals, omnichannel for contact centre, robotics, AI, an electronic health record Cloud-based solution with AWS, a new project management operating model and rebranding the company from Helios Pty Ltd to Afrocentric Technologies Pty Ltd, as well as IT infrastructure modernisation and self-services solutions. He worked on moving and setting up technologies for more than 5000 employees during the first lockdown to work from home including call centre agents in two weeks. Sello and his team implemented POPIA, a R100 million infrastructure upgrade including data encryption and cloud readiness. He also completed restructuring through ssections197 and 189 with a cost saving of R48 million.
As a BA, PMP, BCOM and MBL graduate and an experienced executive, Sello is a notable speaker who has presented on topics ranging from IT strategy, business intelligence & analytics and digitisation at various international conferences and events. He’s also a guest lecturer for the Smart Cities and Aerotropolis Masterclass at the University of KZN. Sello is also a Technology Adviser to many Government Departments.
