www.ceotodaymagazine.com CEO Today Healthcare Awards 2019 78 AUSTRALIA ABOUT ANDREW KURMIS A/Professor Andrew Kurmis is an Adelaide (South Australia, Australia) born and trained consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in primary, complex and revision knee and hip arthroplasty – incorporating the latest in evidence- supported patient-specific, navigated, computer- and robot-assisted techniques. He also offers a range of general orthopaedic services, including optimised non- operative care. A/Professor Kurmis completed his undergraduate studies in 1997 before embarking upon an Honours year in musculoskeletal imaging and a subsequent PhD (Orthopaedics). The Dux of his graduating class, and awarded the prestigious University Medal from Flinders University (South Australia), he then completed pre-vocational medical training in Victoria, the Northern Territory and South Australia before entering Specialist Advanced Orthopaedic Training back in Adelaide. He has also completed Clinical Research or Subspecialty clinical training in Sweden, Germany, the United States and Canada (including a dedicated post-fellowship year in primary and revision arthroplasty in Vancouver). With strong ties to both the University of Adelaide and the SA public health system, A/Professor Andrew Kurmis is heavily involved in teaching, training and supervision, as well as multi-disciplinary clinical research. A/Professor Kurmis has received numerous formal teaching awards and is a current supervisor for the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) advanced training program. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed works and has delivered over 100 national or international presentations at conferences and scientific meetings. His recent receipt of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Justin Miller Medal for outstanding research and presentation, and the 2017 Frank Stinchfield Prize from the International Hip Society for outstanding contribution to the field of hip surgery highlight the significance and quality of his research activities. His current research interests include the genetic markers underpinning pseudotumour development around orthopaedic implants, the application of advanced technologies to hip and knee replacement surgery, and optimised peri-operative pain management/accelerated recovery pathways. Professionally, A/Professor Kurmis is also heavily involved in clinical leadership, governance and training. He currently sits on the National Committee for EMST (ATLS), the State Executive Committee for the AOA, the State Committee for RACS, and has sat on the editorial board of 3 international peer-reviewed journals. He works closely with industry to drive improvements in implant design, optimised surgical techniques, and the safe integration of state-of-the-art technologies into patient management. A/Professor Kurmis’ wider achievements have also been recognised recently by both the AOA, through appointment as the representative 2018 Trans-Tasman Fellow, and by RACS as the current (2019) Pickard Robotic Surgical Scholar. He was also recently inducted as a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers (Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh), becoming only the 8th surgeon from Australia or New Zealand to achieve this honour.
