CEO Today Healthcare Awards

59 www.ceotodaymagazine.com CEO Today Healthcare Awards 2018 USA For Express Scripts CEO Tim Wentworth, leading a Fortune 25 company that helps meet the healthcare needs of nearly 1 in 3 Americans isn’t just business, it’s personal. “My niece has a rare condition, and because of the care we provided her from our specialty pharmacy, she is able to live a fuller life,” said Wentworth. “Every day, I come to work to make sure that if a family member needs care, there is no one better able to deliver that care than Express Scripts.” Along with Express Scripts’ 27,000 employees, Wentworth is proud to help people access safe, affordable and often life-saving medications – improving health outcomes, while lowering cost. The company, based in St. Louis, Mo., offers pharmacy and medical benefits management, specialty pharmacy care and related services. Its 3,000 clients are health plans, employers, government agencies and labor unions which provide healthcare benefits to 100 million people. “I joined this company because I saw an opportunity to make a big difference in the health of millions of people,” Wentworth said. “At Express Scripts, we step up when others step back, we are bold when others shy away, and we champion what’s best for our clients and patients.” Since becoming CEO, Wentworth has overseen the introduction and expansion of innovative solutions that provide a more holistic, simpler, and more affordable care experience for patients, and he has transformed Express Scripts into a healthcare technology leader. Wentworth joined Express Scripts through the Medco acquisition in 2012 as senior vice president and president, sales and account management. He was promoted to president of the company in 2014, elected to the Board of Directors in January 2015, and became CEO in May 2016. In his 13 years at Medco Health Solutions, Wentworth led the employer and key account organizations; and had served as president and CEO of the Accredo subsidiary. In his earlier career, he worked in human resources at Mary Kay Inc. and Pepsi Co. Wentworth believes in the importance of giving back. Express Scripts corporate giving supports causes dedicated to healthcare, the military and veterans, youth and pharmacy education, and to strengthening the communities where employees live and work. Personally, Wentworth is a Trustee of the University of Rochester (NY); serves on the American Heart Association CEO Roundtable; and is a member of Civic Progress, a nonprofit organization of local business leaders seeking to improve the St. Louis region. He and his wife, Robin, recently announced a $4 million gift to their alma mater, Monroe Community College, to help deserving students achieve their dreams. As a leader, he draws heavily on personal experiences as a husband, father, son and a healthcare consumer. In addition, he and his wife Robin are competitive ballroom dancers, an experience that shapes his views on leadership and commitment. “When you are on the dance floor, you know what you’ve rehearsed, and you have to envision what you want to do,” says Wentworth. “Your job is to minimize the missteps and to deliver what the judges expect, while showing something they hadn’t expected. Meeting the needs of clients, patients, investors and other stakeholders – not to mention employees – often means you have to take the same approach.” ABOUT TIM WENTWORTH TIM WENTWORTH President and CEO of Express Scripts ABOUT EXPRESS SCRIPTS Express Scripts (NASDAQ: ESRX) is a healthcare opportunity company.
